The Pirelli Cinturato, first introduced in the 1950's, was the first textile cord braced radial tire. It quickly
became the dominant radial tire in European GT and sports car racing circles.

Combining unprecedented grip with high-speed capabilities, the Cinturato also gave a supremely
comfortable ride. Not surprisingly, the Cinturato soon became standard equipment on the great Italian
marques of the era, including Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini.

                                                        Pirelli History

In 1872 twenty-four year old engineer Giovanni Battista Pirelli founded Pirelli & C. in Milan. By the end
of the century he had begun to diversify into the production of insulated wires for telegraphy (1879)
and undersea telegraph cables (1886), and had launched the first pneumatic bicycle tire (1890).
Pirelli's first pneumatic car tire appeared in 1901.

The company's first victory in a motor race came in the Peking-Paris event in 1907, heralding a
tradition of sporting success on two and four wheels consolidated over the years by figures such as
Nuvolari, Ascari and Fangio.

In the Fifties , the company introduced the Cinturato radial-technology that was to shape the history
of the tire. In the mid-Seventies, Pirelli invented the low profile tire named P7, their most significant
technological innovation since the Cinturato.
                                                   Some tire thoughts

Aston Martins, arguably the best sports cars of the day, until 1962/3  fitted the same size tyres as all
the other top marques such as Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar etc.

The Dutch company Vredestein make tyres in this size. Vredestein tyres have been very popular with
the XK Jags as a cheap tyre but this tyre only has an H-speed rating (130mph)

Importantly with classic cars a tyre should be designed to give you, as the driver, the feed-back you
need to make the experience of driving your car pleasurable, instead of the numb experience you
could get if your car ends up fitted with a modern tyre carcass designed for power steering and
modern suspension.

The Cinturato has once again become the tyre of choice.

Cross-ply (bias-ply) tyres are still the choice where originality is important. Fitting cross-plys
will keep your steering good and light and they also give a very comfortable smooth ride. Directional
stability is the issue for cross-ply tyres and at cruising speeds they tend to wander. This is unavoidable
by the nature of  cross-ply construction, no matter what wild claims some manufacturers may make.

The exciting news for cars such as these is the reemergence of the Pirelli Cinturato 185VR16. This is
the only genuinely period tyre available in this size with a suitable speed rating (V 150mph).  This was
a hugely famous tyre in Europe and it was “THE” upgrade tyre as it had the advantage of being a
radial tyre but it was also progressive.

Cinturato's are now available again exclusively through Lucas Automotive in the US.
